　将来に期待して、現在の意味はすべて未来の(もたらすものの)中にある、と考える習憤は、有害（な習慣）である。（なぜなら）部分に価値があるのでなければ、全体に（も）価値はありえない。人生は、ヒーローとヒロインが、信じられないような不運（逆境）を乗り越え、最後にはハッピーエンドで報われる、といったメロドラマの類推で思い描かれるべきではない。（出典：『ラッセル幸福論』第２章「バイロン風の不幸」）
（The habit of looking to the future and thinking that the whole meaning of the present lies in what it will bring forth is a pernicious one.
