　両親は1864年に、両方ともわずか22歳で結婚した。(ラッセルの初婚も22歳であることに注意)　わたくしの兄が生まれたのが、彼が自伝で自慢しているように、両親の結婚後９ヶ月と４日目であった。わたくしが生まれるほんの少し前、両親は、ワイ川のきりたった岸のちょうど真上の森の中の人里離れたところにあるラヴェンスクロフトと呼ばれたきわめて淋しい家（現在はクレイドン・ホールと呼ばれている。)に行って住んだ。私が生まれて３日目に母は、そこの家から自分の母にあてて、私のことについて手紙を書いた。
(My parents married in 1864, when they were both only twenty-two. My brother, as he boasts in his autobiography, was nine months and four days after the wedding. Shortly before I was born, they went to live in a very lonely house called Ravenscroft (now called 'Cleiddon Hall') in a wood just above the steep banks of the Wye. From the house, three days after I was born, my mother wrote a description of me to her mother: ）
