その人の生涯の幸福に終止符を打つにちがいないと思われるような'悩みごと'も、時がたつにつれ色あせてゆき、ついには、その痛切さを思い出すことさえほとんどできなくなる。しかし、さらにこうした自己中心的な考えに加うるに、（各個人の）自我など全然世界の大きな部分ではない、という事実がある。自己を超越するものに思考と希望を集中できる人は、人生の普通の悩みごとの中に、全くのエゴイストには望めない、ある種の安らぎを見いだすことができる。

Even great sorrows can be survived; troubles which seem as if they must put an end to happiness for life fade with the lapse of time until it becomes almost impossible to remembcr their poignancy. But over and above these self-centred considerations is the fact that one's ego is no very large part of the world. The man who can centre his thoughts and hopes upon something transcending self can find a certain peace in the ordinary troubles of life which is impossible to the pure egoist.
